Human authorship in festival and award rules
Human authorship is the idea that a person, not a model, is responsible for a film's creative choices. Rules that stress it judge AI films by the human work behind them. From 2 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
The Academy's rules for the 99th Oscars require screenplays to be human-authored and count acting roles only when humans perform them with consent, and the Academy may ask for more information about AI use and human authorship.
WAIFF USA puts it as one of five published rules: every film has a named director or creative lead who takes authorial responsibility, and AI is a tool in the filmmaker's hands.
Human authorship does not mean no AI. Both sets of rules allow generative tools; they ask who made the decisions.
For an entrant, the practical step is to be able to describe those decisions: the script, the choices in the edit, the direction given to each shot.
| Festival | Rule | What the rules say |

2What a generator hands an entrant
For an entrant reading “Human authorship”, this is what SceneMixer publishes about the film its pipeline hands over:
SceneMixer writes dialogue into the script analysis, assigns each line to a shot with a speaker and a short delivery note, and the video model performs it — picture and audio generated together, so the mouth forms that sentence in the language you chose.

An AI short drama is a serialized show of 60–120 second vertical episodes whose cast, sets and footage are generated by AI. Making one takes six steps: analyze the script into episodes, lock a consistent cast with reference art, localize for your market, write and edit storyboards, generate each 4–15 second shot, then composite and publish.
