Who owns an AI film: tools' terms beside entry rules
Five of the seven tools say the user owns what they generate: Higgsfield, LTX Studio, Midjourney, SceneMixer and Sora. Google Flow and Runway say they claim no ownership of it. Six festivals here make entrants warrant they hold every right in the film. From 7 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
| Tool | Reading | In their words |
|---|---|---|
| Google Flow | Maker claims no ownership | Google's terms, quoted in the Flow help, say Google won't claim ownership of generated content |
| Higgsfield | User owns the output | The help centre says users own their outputs, citing section 4.4 of the terms |
| LTX Studio | User owns the output | The terms say the user owns the output, stock footage and outside material excepted |
| Midjourney | User owns the output | Users own the assets they create, as far as the law allows; larger companies need a Pro or Mega plan to own them |
| Runway | Maker claims no ownership | Runway's terms say it does not claim ownership of your content, which they define to include outputs |
| SceneMixer | User owns the output | Its terms say the user owns generated results as far as the law allows, commercial use included |
| Sora | User owns the output | OpenAI's terms say the user owns the output and assign OpenAI's rights in it, as far as the law allows |
Inclusion rule. All 7 tools on the filmmaking-tools register. Order. Alphabetical by tool name.
A festival's rights clause and a tool's ownership clause answer different questions. The festival asks the entrant to promise they can license the film for screening; the tool's terms say whether its maker keeps any claim over what it generated.
Owning an output is not the same as holding copyright in it. LTX's terms say so in the same clause, warning that the law may give no ownership in AI-generated output at all, and the grants from Midjourney, SceneMixer and Sora are made only as far as the law allows.
Conditions sit in the terms themselves: Midjourney ties ownership for larger companies to a Pro or Mega plan, and LTX leaves out stock footage and other outside material inside a generation. Music, voices and footage brought in from elsewhere are the entrant's to clear in any case, which is what the warranty clauses in festival rules are about.
